Travelling with an eVisa: your passport and UKVI account checklist

Short answer: Before travelling with an eVisa, check that your immigration status is correct and that the passport you will use is linked to your UKVI account. Your account details and the passenger information supplied to the carrier must match. A passport renewal does not automatically update the account, and an expired physical residence card should not be treated as your current permission to travel.

Digital status is convenient when everything matches. It can be stressful to discover a mismatch at check-in, especially when you have children with you or need to return for work. This checklist is designed to move those checks to a calmer moment before departure.

Three records that should tell the same story

Your passport identifies you. Your UKVI account connects your identity documents and personal details to the Home Office record. Your eVisa shows the immigration status and conditions held on that record. These are related, but updating one does not necessarily update all three.

Compare your name, date of birth, nationality and passport details across your passport and account, then check that the eVisa shows the status you expect. Read the Home Office’s eVisa travel guidance rather than relying on a screenshot of a previous account view.

Your pre-travel checklist

  1. Sign in while you have time: make sure you can receive any sign-in codes and access the account securely.
  2. Check the travel document: use the passport or travel document actually added to the account, including the current number after renewal.
  3. Check status and conditions: confirm the displayed permission, expiry information and any relevant restrictions.
  4. Match the carrier booking: compare the personal details you gave the airline or other carrier with the linked passport.
  5. Prepare additional proof: obtain a travel share code where useful and retain the information needed to use it.
  6. Check everyone separately: a child’s correct account is not established by the parent’s account being correct.

These practical checks do not replace the destination country’s entry requirements. A correct UK eVisa does not grant permission to enter another country.

What if you have renewed your passport?

Use the UKVI account update service to check which changes you can make and which evidence is required. Do not assume that a pending change has already been accepted. Recheck the account before using the new passport for travel.

The process can differ when you are outside the UK, when your passport is not biometric, or when personal details such as your name have changed. Follow the instructions for your situation. If you have more than one nationality, ensure the passport you intend to use is added where required. British or Irish dual citizens should check the separate guidance for their nationality rather than treating themselves as ordinary eVisa travellers.

What is a travel share code?

A share code lets an authorised checker access relevant status information. The official travel guidance says a travel share code is valid for 90 days and can be used more than once. Use the correct service for the purpose; an employer’s right-to-work check and a travel check should not be confused.

The view-and-share service explains how to obtain proof. A share code is not a new visa or a way to extend expired permission. Keep it securely and share it only where needed.

If your status is wrong or you cannot sign in

First distinguish an account-access problem from an incorrect immigration record. Losing access to a telephone number is different from the eVisa showing an unexpected permission type. Use the appropriate recovery or error-reporting route.

Record when you raised the issue and keep reference numbers and relevant correspondence privately. Do not publish your passport details, account codes or screenshots in an open forum. London Immigration Assistance can help you understand the immigration information and identify the appropriate next step within our scope; only UKVI can correct its own record.

A pending application is a separate travel question

Being able to see an eVisa does not mean travel is safe while an application to remain in the UK is pending. In-country routes commonly warn that leaving the Common Travel Area can withdraw the pending application; section 3C permission raises an additional issue when leaving the UK.

For example, the Graduate application instructions give specific travel restrictions. Check the instructions for your own route before booking. Do not use this pre-travel account checklist as a decision about whether you should leave during a pending case.

If the carrier cannot verify your eVisa

The official guidance tells carriers to contact the UK Border Force carrier support hub when they cannot check an eVisa. Be ready with your correct travel document and additional proof, but do not assume a last-minute call will resolve an incorrect account before departure.

An eVisa and an ETA are different things. Applying for an ETA is not a way to repair an eVisa account or replace existing UK immigration permission.

Frequently asked questions

Does my eVisa mean I can travel without a passport?

No. You still need a valid passport or travel document, and the appropriate document must be linked to your account.

Is an old residence card expiry always my visa expiry?

No. Check the actual immigration record and decision information. Physical document expiry and immigration permission are distinct.

Can an adviser guarantee airline boarding?

No. Carriers and border authorities make their own checks. Professional help can identify issues in advance, but cannot promise a travel outcome.
