Graduate to Skilled Worker: check sponsorship before your visa expires

Short answer: A Graduate visa holder may be able to switch to Skilled Worker permission inside the UK, but needs a qualifying sponsored job, the relevant salary, English evidence and other requirements. The Graduate visa itself cannot be extended. A lower “new entrant” salary option has conditions and a time limit; it is not available indefinitely to every recent graduate.

If you hope to build a career in the UK, the strongest planning starts before the final months of Graduate permission. It gives you time to check a real offer and understand what the employer must do, rather than assuming any job can be converted into sponsorship.

Ask the employer for the immigration details

Confirm whether the organisation is an approved sponsor, whether it will sponsor this particular role and what occupation code describes the duties. Ask for the guaranteed salary, contracted hours, proposed start date and expected sponsorship duration.

Recruitment language such as “sponsorship possible” is not a completed immigration assessment. The official switching page and job requirements should be applied to the actual offer.

Check the salary option and its duration

A qualifying new entrant may have a different salary calculation from the standard Skilled Worker option. The criteria include specific circumstances, such as qualifying recent Student or Graduate history, rather than simply being new to an employer.

The lower-salary guidance describes a maximum four-year period for the relevant new-entrant arrangements, including time on Graduate permission. Previous grants therefore need to be included in the calculation.

For illustration, someone who has already used a substantial period of Graduate permission should not assume another unrestricted four-year grant on a discounted salary. If the proposed salary only works under a time-limited option, discuss the likely later salary and extension position before accepting the immigration plan.

English evidence at the switch

The current Skilled Worker English guidance normally requires B2 for a switch from a different visa. An eligible UK qualification can provide evidence, but the precise qualification and documentation should be checked.

Do not book a new test automatically if you already have qualifying evidence. Equally, do not assume any certificate used for an earlier route establishes the current level. Match the evidence to the rule that applies to this application.

Build a timetable backwards from expiry

  • Confirm the actual Graduate permission expiry.
  • Allow time for employer assessment and sponsorship arrangements.
  • Prepare the applicant’s identity, English and other evidence.
  • Check the sponsorship reference and proposed dates.
  • Submit the appropriate valid application within the permitted window.
  • Plan the period awaiting a decision under the applicable conditions.

A draft online form, a consultation booking or an employer’s intention to sponsor is not a submitted application. If expiry is close, obtain advice promptly rather than assuming administrative work alone preserves permission.

Work and travel during the application

Do not assume every pending application lets you change work arrangements immediately. Check your present conditions, the new employment and the rules relevant to the pending application.

The official switching page warns against travelling outside the Common Travel Area before a decision because the application will be withdrawn. If existing permission expires during consideration, section 3C can raise an additional travel issue. Plan holidays and notice periods around the real application sequence.

What about your family?

Your partner’s or child’s permission does not automatically switch because you change routes. Check dependant eligibility and their application timetable separately. Occupation restrictions and previous family history can affect the position.

List each person’s expiry date and proposed route so one family member is not overlooked. Their government charges and evidence also need separate budgeting.

Settlement planning

The Skilled Worker settlement timing guidance identifies the routes that count towards the usual qualifying period. Graduate permission is not listed as qualifying time for the ordinary five-year Skilled Worker settlement calculation.

It may be relevant to a different long-residence assessment, but that is a separate route with its own rules. Do not merge the two timelines into one assumed “five years in the UK” test.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my Graduate visa instead?

No. The Graduate route is not extendable. A different route may be available if you meet its requirements.

Does being a graduate guarantee a new-entrant salary?

No. The criteria, dates, salary calculation and maximum period need checking.

Will my dependants switch automatically?

No. Each person’s eligibility and application need separate attention.
