Short answer: A Skilled Worker visa is not unrestricted permission to move to any employer. Changing employer normally requires a new qualifying sponsorship arrangement and an application to update your permission. Some changes of role or occupation code also require an update. Check the rules before starting the new sponsored job.
A new role can offer better pay, progression or stability. The immigration sequence should support that move rather than become an unexpected obstacle after you have resigned. Start by identifying what is changing and when.
Which changes need checking?
The official update guidance describes the situations requiring a new application. These include a change of employer and certain changes to the job or occupation code. A move from a listed occupation to another position can also affect the assessment.
Not every internal change requires the same procedure. A change of job title without a change in duties is different from moving to a materially different occupation. The employer may also have reporting responsibilities even where the worker does not need the same application step.
Check the new sponsor and role
Obtain the proposed occupation code, duties, salary, hours and sponsorship dates. The employer must be approved for the relevant work route and the actual vacancy must qualify.
A job title similar to your existing role does not establish that the same code or salary rule applies. Check the job requirements for the new arrangement, including any applicable transitional provisions.
Salary can need a fresh assessment
Do not assume that a salary accepted for the first grant remains sufficient after a move. The relevant going rate, hours, permitted pay and date-based arrangements need checking. If you relied on a lower-salary option, identify whether you still qualify for it and for how long.
For illustration, an internal promotion could involve different duties and a different occupation code even if pay increases. Conversely, a modest title change might leave the occupation unchanged. The real duties and rules determine the immigration work, not the label alone.
When can you start the new job?
The official update page says not to start the new job until confirmation of the new permission is received. It also describes continuing the current job or notice period while a timely application is being considered, subject to the relevant conditions.
Coordinate your notice period and proposed start date with both employers. Do not treat payment of an application fee or attendance at an appointment as the grant of updated work permission.
What evidence should you collect?
- Current immigration permission and earlier relevant sponsorship history.
- The new sponsorship reference and its supporting job details.
- The contract, salary, hours and proposed start date.
- Evidence required for the applicable English rule.
- Relevant qualification or registration documents where needed.
- Family members’ current permission and planned applications.
The English guidance distinguishes some existing workers from new switches. Previous evidence may be reusable in the applicable circumstances, but should not be assumed to answer every new application.
Travel and family applications
The update process warns against leaving the Common Travel Area before a decision because the application will be withdrawn. If existing permission expires during consideration, section 3C creates a separate issue for travel outside the UK. Check before arranging a holiday between jobs.
Your partner’s or child’s permission does not automatically extend or update with yours. They may not need to apply on precisely the same date in every case, but their expiry and continued eligibility must be planned. Use the family guidance for the actual occupation and history.
Keep a clear transition plan
Make one timeline showing the sponsorship date, application window, present permission expiry, notice period, expected decision and proposed start. Treat expected processing time as planning information rather than a guaranteed employment start date.
Keep the completed application and decision records securely. After a grant, check that the digital status and work arrangements match what was approved.
Frequently asked questions
Can I begin the new job while the application is pending?
Do not assume so. The official update instructions say to wait for confirmation of the new permission before starting the new sponsored job.
Does a pay rise mean no application is needed?
No. Employer and occupation changes can require an update independently of whether pay rises.
Will my family’s visas update automatically?
No. Their permission and application requirements need separate attention.
